Dis, the mother of Fili and Kili, and the sister of Thorin, after discovering their fate in the Battle of the Five Armies.

Dis to me seems like one of the most strong women in Middle Earth. She loses EVERYONE. Her grandfather, father, Frerin (her other brother), Thorin, Fili, and Kili. She lost her children. I only wish Tolkien expanded on her character more. I'm probably gonna have to write a fic on it.

Yes, she doesn't have a beard, and she looks pretty. I figured if she produced Fili and Kili, and if she is Majestic Thorin's sibling, she ought to look good. And Kili barely has a beard anyway, so I didn't give his mother one. Does anyone know if it's true anyway? That dwarf women have beards? Or was Gimli just joking?

Anyways, sorry about the awkward proportions. I realize the swords should be longer, but I only realized when I finished.

Okay, you just killed me. This is SO heartbreaking (you could have added Kíli's bow to the picture too). Dís does indeed lose everything, she's the only member of her whole family to survive. What a tragic fate... I can't even begin to imagine what it is like for a mother to learn about the death of her two boys (and only remaining brother) all at once. As Théoden would say : "No parent should have to bury their child"... And much less ALL their children.

*excuse me while I go sit in a corner and cry for a moment*

I wish there was more info in Tolkien's books about Dís, but at least she's mentioned at all - she's the only female Dwarf in the family trees - and she most definitely deserves it, for being the mother of such wonderful, brave sons. I would really love to read a fanfiction about her, if you feel like writing one !

*wipes tears off face*...Where was I ? Oh yeah, the beards. Well, Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop did choose to give female Dwarves facial hair, but I think your beardless version works perfectly fine. You're right, after all Kíli barely has a beard himself, so I wouldn't be surprised if Dís didn't have one at all ! As for being beautiful... I totally agree with you : with a brother like Thorin Oakenshield and two sons like Fíli and Kíli, how on earth could she NOT be ? Sexiness runs in the family.

Dwarf-women's appearance is one of those things where Tolkein was vague. The one indisputable fact is that Dwarf-women are few in number and are thus protected and hidden away except in great need (say, when your home has been invaded by a great fire-breathing dragon). The alike-in-voice-and-appearance part is Gimli's explanation to non-Dwarves, but it's also an indisputable fact that Dwarves will do anything to keep their secrets. I wouldn't put it past the Dwarves to lie or exaggerate about their women to protect them.

I am not sure if he was joking because some of the dwarf women concept art for the movies had them having beards.

yes it was a joke, dwarf women are manly in behavior but not always in apearance.
